May 8, 2023 School Board Meeting Minutes

The South Winneshiek CSD Board of Education held their regular board meeting on May 8, 2023 in the EL/MS music room in Ossian.  The meeting was called to order by board vice-president Don Schroeder at 5:30 pm. 

After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, roll call took place:  Present: Craig Neuzil, Patricia Schissel, Don Schroeder, and Ron Hemesath. Absent: Wendy Mihm-Herold.

Moved by Hemesath, seconded by Neuzil to approve the agenda as presented. Motion carried unanimously. 

Review and discussion about previous minutes, bills, appointments, resignations, terminations and donations took place.  Moved by Schissel and seconded by Hemesath to approve the consent items which included the resignation of Justin Izer – Head MS Football coach; Dakota Gray – Head MS Wrestling coach; Brooke Lodge – Asst. MS Volleyball coach. Appointments: Justin Izer Asst. Varsity Football $3026.00; Carter Wenthold Asst. Varsity Football $3026.00; Russell Tieskoetter Asst. MS Football $2136.00; Dakota Gray Asst. Varsity Wrestling $3026.00; Betty Backes Para BA with subbing Step 10 $17.35; Jason Drucker E-Sports coach; Kurt Straube E Sports coach; Courtnee Gray Asst. MS Volleyball $2136.00. Motion carried unanimously.

Schroeder welcomed visitors. 

Spotlight on Education: Mike Wenthold shared information about establishing a chess league for third grade through twelfth grade that would include some travel for competitions.

New Business: 

  1. Moved by Neuzil and seconded by Hemesath to approve the graduating class of 2023.  Motion carried unanimously.
  2. Moved Neuzil and seconded by Schissel to approve the MOU with Luther College for field clinical experience. Motion carried unanimously. 
  3. Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Neuzil to approve a middle school girls wrestling coach position. Motion carried unanimously. 
  4. Moved by Neuzil and seconded by Schissel to approve Pan O Gold for the bread vendor, Prairie Farms for the milk vendor and Farmers Union Coop as the Gas, Diesel and Propane vendor. Motion carried unanimously. 
  5. Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Schissel to approve the school and nutrition fees as listed. Motion carried unanimously.

  1. Moved by Neuzil and seconded by Hemesath to approve the cost of school bus CDL training at Northland CDL Training with the requirement that the individual sign an agreement to remain employed at South Winneshiek for 5 years after completion of the CDL program. Motion carried unanimously. 
  2. Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Neuzil to approve the sharing agreement with North Fayette Valley for a curriculum director. Motion carried unanimously. 
  3. Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Schissel to approve the remodeling of the high school kitchen dish room. Motion carried unanimously. 

Administrative reports were provided. 

The next regular meeting will be on June 12, 2023 in the boardroom in Calmar at 5:30 pm.
