Board of Education Regular Board Meeting
August 12, 2019

The South Winneshiek Community School District held their monthly meeting on August 12, 2019 in Ossian at the Elementary/Middle school building. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM by board president Wendy Mihm-Herold.

After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited roll call took place. Present: Wendy Mihm-Herold; Corey Meyer, Don Schroeder, Patricia Schissel, and Bob Busch. Absent: none.

Moved by Schroeder and seconded by Busch to amend and then approve the agenda by adding new business item D: Air Conditioner replacement for the study hall. Motion carried.

Review and discussion about previous board minutes, financials, bills, appointments, resignations, open enrollments and donations took place. Moved by Schissel and seconded by Meyer to approve the consent items as presented. Resignations: Ric Benzing – Musical Director Accompanist; Danyelle Kruse –Paraprofessional; Leah Stewart – Teacher; Rhonda Todd – Co-Winter Ticket Taking. Appointments:Court Ellis – Volunteer MS Football Coach; John Frana – Sub Bus Driver; Jill Garcia – Paraprofessional$10.05; Christina Gerleman – Paraprofessional $10.05; Donna Kos – Teacher BA+30-11 $55,356.00; Mike Johnson – Website Master $1,200.00; Blake Moen – MS Assistant Football Coach, Step I $1,692.00; Sara Schmitt- SWEF Director – $5,000; Chelsea Solem – Paraprofessional $10.05; John Svendsen – Sub Bus Driver; Harvey Zweibohmer – Sub Bus Driver. Amended Contract – Julie Kipp – Winter Ticket Taking -$1,184.40. Motion carried unanimously.

Old Business:

  1. Moved by Schroeder and seconded by Busch to approve Kristina Smith as board secretary/treasurer. Motion carried unanimously. The oath of office was given to Mrs. Smith.
  2. No action was taken regarding cell phone options.

New Business:

  1. Moved by Schissel and seconded by Meyer to approve the Level I and Level II Investigators as follows: Motion carried unanimously.
    1. Elementary/Middle School
      1. Level I Investigator – Jason Halverson, Principal
      2. Alternate – Mary Kleve, Guidance Counselor
      3. Level II Investigator – Calmar/Ossian Police
    2. High School
      1. Level I Investigator – Kris Einck, Principal
      2. Alternate – Connie Euans, Guidance Counselor
      3. Level II Investigator – Calmar/Ossian Police
  2. Moved by Busch and seconded by Schroeder to approve the bids for additional security camera sat the high school, elementary/middle school and the door notification system from Hawkeye Communication for $16,174. Motion carried unanimously.
  3. Moved by Meyer and seconded by Schissel to approve the NICC Concurrent Enrollment and Health Occupations Academy Contracts. Mihm-Herold abstained from voting. Voting Aye: Schissel, Meyer, Schroeder and Busch. Nay: None. Motion carried.
  4. Moved by Busch and seconded by Meyer to approve the replacement of the air conditioner in the study hall by Becker Hardware, not to exceed $10,000. Motion carried unanimously.

Administrative reports were given by Mr. Halverson and Mr. Einck. A thank you to the South Winneshiek Athletic Boosters and the South Winneshiek Education Foundation for their support of our students and staff.

Announcements: The next regular meeting will be Monday, September 9 at 6:00 PM in the district boardroom in Calmar.

Moved by Busch and seconded by Schissel to adjourn at 7:38 pm. Motion carried unanimously.
