August 9, 2021 School Board Meeting Minutes

The South Winneshiek CSD Board of Education held its regularly scheduled board meeting on August 9, 2021 in the board room in Calmar. The meeting was called to order by board president Wendy Mihm-Herold at 5:30 pm. 

After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, roll call took place:  Present: Wendy Mihm-Herold, Patricia Schissel, Don Schroeder, Craig Neuzil and Ron Hemesath. Absent: none. 

Moved by Schroeder and seconded by Hemesath to approve the board agenda as presented.  Motion carried unanimously. 

Review and discussion about previous board minutes, bills, appointments, resignations, open enrollments and donations took place. Moved by Neuzil and seconded by Schissel to approve the consent items as presented; Resignations: Lindsey Haas – Superintendent Administrative Assistant; Alice Miller – Paraprofessional and Jerome Uhlenhake – MS Head Boys Basketball.  Appointments: Darcy Einck – Volunteer Volleyball; JT Monroe – Volunteer Volleyball; Lana Ott -Classroom Volunteer; Brenda Suckow – Cheer Coach Volunteer; Kathleen Wickman – Cheer Coach Volunteer. Motion carried unanimously. 

Mihm-Herold welcomed visitors.  

Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Neuzil to open the public hearing about the FY22 Return to Learn Plan.  Motion carried unanimously.  Mr. Einck presented the return to learn plan. There were no comments from the public. 

Moved by Schroeder and seconded by Hemesath to close the public hearing on the FY22 Return to Learn Plan.  Motion carried unanimously. 

Moved by Neuzil and seconded by Hemesath to open the public hearing on the usage of ESSER III funding. Motion carried unanimously.  Mr. Einck presented the planned usage of the ESSER III fundings to utilize the funds for prevention and mitigation strategies, social and emotional learning and academic impact of learning loss. There were no comments from the public. 

Moved by Schroeder and seconded by Schissel to close the public hearing on the usage of the ESSER III funding.  Motion carried unanimously. 

Old Business:  None

New Business: 

  1. Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Schroeder to approve the FY 22 return to learn plan as presented. Motion carried unanimously. 
  2. Moved by Schissel and seconded by Neuzil to approve the usage of ESSER III funds for prevention and mitigation strategies, social and emotional learning and academic impact of learning loss. Motion carried unanimously. 
  3. Moved by Neuzil and seconded by Hemesath to appoint the Level I and Level II investigators: 
    1. Elementary Middle School
      1. Level I Jason Halverson, Principal; Alternate: Mary Kleve, Guidance Counselor
      2. Level II Calmar/Ossian Police
    2. High School
      1. Level I Kris Einck, Principal; Alternate – Connie Euans, Guidance Counselor
      2. Level II Calmar/Ossian Police
  4. Moved by Neuzil and seconded by Hemesath to approve the Coaches Handbook as presented. Motion carried unanimously. 

Administrative Reports were presented by Mr. Einck and Mr. Halverson. 

The board wanted to publicly thank the South Winneshiek Athletic Boosters for their support.  They are integral to our sports program.  The SWAB annual calendar sales are currently underway. The calendars cost $30 and there are many fabulous coupons to use throughout the year; you can contact any athlete from South Winn to make a purchase. Thank you to Zak Kriener for the layout and design of the calendars.  

The next regular meeting will be held September 13, 2021 in the Music Room at the EL/MS in Ossian at 5:30 pm.  Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Neuzil to adjourn at 6:08 pm.  Motion carried unanimously.
