Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Parent Notification

Federal legislation, ESSA, requires that all public school districts provide parents the following notification:

As a parent of a student at South Winneshiek Community School District, you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct your child. Federal law allows you to ask for certain information about your child’s classroom teachers, and requires us to give you this information in a timely manner if you ask for it. Specifically, you have the right to ask for the following information about each of your child’s classroom teachers: (a) Whether the Iowa Department of Education has licensed or qualified the teacher for the grades and subjects he or she is assigned. (b) Whether the Iowa Department of Education has decided that the teacher can teach in a classroom without being licensed or qualified under state regulations because of special circumstances. (c) The teacher’s college minor; whether the individual has any advanced degrees, and if so, the subject(s) of those degrees. (d) Whether any teachers’ aides or similar paraprofessionals provide services to your child, and if they do, their qualifications.

Although not required as part of the federal law, the South Winneshiek Community School District shall also make available the above information regarding any administrator to any parent requesting the information. If you would like to receive any of this information, please call the Superintendent’s Office at 563.562.3269. If you have questions or concerns regarding this notification, you may contact Superintendent Kris Einck at 563.562.3269 or email him at keinck@swinn.k12.ia.us. Under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) legislation, secondary school students and/or the parents of a student may request that the student’s name, address, and telephone listing described previously not be released without prior written parental consent. As a school district, it is our responsibility to notify you as parents of this option. Therefore, at registration, all parents will be provided a form to request that the information not be released.
