Board of Education Regular Meeting

February 10, 2020 @ 5:00 P.M.

  • The South Winneshiek Community School District board of education opened negotiations on February 10, 2020 at the Calmar center. The meeting was called to order at 5:00 pm by president Wendy Mihm-Herold. 
  • After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, roll call took place. Present: Wendy Mihm-Herold, Corey Meyer and Ron Hemesath. Patricia Schissel was available via telephone.  Don Schroeder was absent.
  • Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Schissel to approve the agenda. Motion carried unanimously.
  • New Business:  Dave Orvis presented the South Winneshiek Educational Support Professionals opening proposal to begin negotiations.  The goal is to reach a contract settlement for the 2020-2021 school year that will be agreeable to both parties. Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Meyer to begin negotiations with the South Winneshiek Educational Support Professionals. Motion carried unanimously. 
  • Moved by Schissel and seconded by Meyer to adjourn at 5:02 pm. Motion carried unanimously.

The South Winneshiek Community School District board of education opened negotiations on February 10, 2020 at the Calmar center. The meeting was called to order at 5:03 pm by president Wendy Mihm-Herold. 

  • Roll call: Present: Wendy Mihm-Herold, Corey Meyer and Ron Hemesath. Patricia Schissel was available via telephone.  Don Schroeder was absent.
  • Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Schissel to approve the agenda.  Motion carried unanimously. 
  • New Business:  Mr. Einck presented the counter proposal to the South Winneshiek Educational Support Professionals with the goal to reach a contract settlement for the 2020-2021 school year that will be agreeable to both parties. 
  • Moved by Meyer and seconded by Hemesath to adjourn at 5:04 pm. Motion carried unanimously.

  • New Business:  Julie Nolte presented the South Winneshiek Education Association opening proposal to begin negotiations. The goal is to reach a contract settlement for the 2020-2021 school year that will be agreeable to both parties. Moved by Meyer and seconded by Hemesath to begin negotiations with the South Winneshiek Education Association.  Motion carried unanimously. 
  • Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Meyer to adjourn at 5:06 pm. Motion carried unanimously.

The South Winneshiek Community School District board of education held its regularly scheduled meeting on February 10, 2020 at the Calmar Center.  The meeting was called to order at 5:08 pm by president Wendy Mihm-Herold. 

  • Roll call: Present: Wendy Mihm-Herold, Corey Meyer and Ron Hemesath. Patricia Schissel was available via telephone.  Don Schroeder was absent.
  • Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Meyer to approve the agenda.  Motion carried unanimously. 
  • Review and discussion about previous board minutes, financials, bills, appointments, resignations, open enrollments and donations took place.  Moved by Meyer and seconded by Hemesath to approve the consent items. Resignations: Taylor Vagts – Paraprofessional; Appointments: Luther Anderson – Sub Bus Driver; Kristi Kuboushek – Volunteer Wrestling Cheer Coach; Diane Langreck – Paraprofessional $10.05. Connie Meyer – Custodian $12.45. Motion carried unanimously.
  • President Mihm-Herold welcomed visitors. 
  • Moved by Schissel and seconded by Meyer to open the public hearing on the 2020-2021 District Calendar. Motion carried unanimously. 
  • Ms. Ana Olson-Johnson presented to the board about the possibility of planting a watershed garden as a tool to help educate students on the effects that proper water drainage can have on plants.

Old Business: None

New Business: 

  1. Steve Samec from Hacker & Nelson, Co. presented the 2019 audit results to the board.  Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Schissel to approve the 2019 audit. Motion carried. Corey Meyer abstained from the vote. 
  2. Moved by Meyer and seconded by Hemesath to close the public hearing on the 2020-2021 District Calendar. Motion carried unanimously. 
  3. Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Meyer to approve the 2020-2021 District Calendar. Motion carried unanimously. 
  4. Moved by Meyer and seconded by Schissel to approve the resolution to assign Wendy Mihm-Herold and Kris Smith as authorized signers on the Pepsi Account at Fidelity Bank with the intention to close the account and give the funds to the social committee. Motion carried through roll call vote: Aye: Meyer, Schissel and Hemesath. Nay: none. Abstaining: Mihm-Herold.
  5. Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Meyer to approve the SODA trip to LaCrosse, Wi. Motion carried unanimously. 
  • Administrative reports were provided by Ms. Neftzger, Mr. Halverson and Mr. Einck. 
  • Announcements:  The next regular meeting will be held in the Ossian center at 5:30 pm on March 9, 2020. 
  • Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Meyer to adjourn at 6:15 pm. Motion carried unanimously.
