South Winneshiek Community School District
Board of Education Work Session (Calmar Boardroom)
November 9, 2022
The South Winneshiek CSD Board of Education held a work session on November 9, 2022 in the boardroom in Calmar. The work session was called to order at 5:01 pm by board president Wendy Mihm-Herold.
After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, roll call took place. Present: Craig Neuzil, Don Schroeder, Patricia Schissel, Ron Hemesath and Wendy Mihm-Herold. Absent: none.
Moved by Hemesath and seconded by Schissel to approve the agenda. Motion carried unanimously.
Work session topics:
- Review of board policies took place. Betsy Nefzger went over suggested changes to the board policies 602.01-602.03 and 605.01-605.03 regarding curriculum.
- Discussion took place about proposed changes to the three director district boundaries. Redistricting may be needed every ten years following the census. South Winneshiek had the current districts reviewed by Cornerstone Geospatial Consulting. The Iowa Secretary of State requires district populations to be within 10% (Largest district/by the smallest district = less than 1.10). After the 2020 census the population of the South Winneshiek director districts (DD) were as follows: DD 1 was 1336; DD 2 was 1745 and DD 3 was 1384. The difference between the larges and smallest district was 1.31 resulting in the need to redistrict the boundaries. The proposed redistricting aligns the population more evenly in each director district as follows: DD1 1487; DD2 1491 and DD3 1487. A resolution on the boundary changes will be held on December 12 at 5:30 during the regular board meeting in Calmar.
- Other discussion took place regarding suggested savings in the capital or PPEL accounts.
Moved by Neuzil and seconded by Schroeder to adjourn at 6:05 pm. Motion carried unanimously.
Respectfully Submitted
