The South Winn varsity esports team wrapped up its regular season play last night with a sub-state playoff match against top-seated Linn Mar High School. The team of Chandler Riehle, Kole Hageman, Braden Massman, Carson Straube, and Zach Phillips lost their first game 6-3 and rallied early in the second game; however, Linn-Mar was able to overcome the Warriors and win the second game 7-5.
Coach Kurt Straube had the following to say: “I couldn’t be prouder of our Rainbow 6 varsity team this season. Though the entire esports team had a great time learning and improving at various games this season, these five individuals really stood out and developed a close-knit sense of teamwork. In a game built on strategy and fluid communication, they impressed us all with their abilities to problem-solve, work together, and try new approaches to accomplish their goals. Despite the defeat, this was a great inaugural season for SW esports, and behalf of myself, coach Drucker, and the whole team, I know we’re looking forward to what the spring season will yield.”
